Folks,
I know we've had similar discussions about the technical skills needed to
be an effective Web developer. After months of searching for another Web
developer, my manager wants to drop his standards. He was looking for
people with experience in the basics, HTML, graphics, then, I assume, the
snowball effect took over... Java, JavaScript, CGI/PERL, and not just
"hacks," real coders. This list continues until one would expect the
candidate to have at the very least, an allergic reaction to Kryptonite.
In the four months that I have been with the company, there has been only
one Web development issue that I could not handle (using Lotus Domino,
Notes, and Site Driver, a site content management system), and another that
posed some significant challange. I don't want to be swayed by my own
judgement of my future co-worker. The candidate could have little more than
a pulse to perform the job.
My question for those who might consider hiring an entry level Developer,
what basics much he/she have in their skill set? We're looking for someone
who knows enough to be useful, and, hopefully, just beyond the dangerous
stage. :)
