Yes, I suppose "developer" is somewhat more chichi than "designer", but 
the two words do have distinct meanings in the context of Web site 
development, IMO.

Any of the major "developer" sites around the Web are oriented largely 
towards the propellerhead set: the CGI programmers, dbase integrators, 
sysadmins and other who are more concerned with the technical details of 
operating servers and writing Web applications/scripts.  Examples of such 
sites are www.developer.com, developer.netscape.com and 
www.webdeveloper.com.

"Designers", in my interpretation, are more concerned with the visual 
appearance of a site, including its graphical elements, look-and-feel or 
what have you.  On this list I think we have a mix of both, "designers" and 
"developers".
