What, I wonder, is a real coder? Would you not hire the person who
often posts this in usenet "Just another Perl hacker". If so you
knocked Randal L. Schwartz out of the running.

And we wonder why there is a shortage of skilled workers.
If I were to open up as a "web developer" then my first employee
would be an internet architect. This person would do as much writing,
programming and drawing as an architect would do plumbing, carpentry
and brick laying. I would expect my internet architect to conceive
the plan, find whomever he needed to bring it to fruition.
I would hire a programmer to program.
I would hire a graphic designer to design.
I would hire a writer to write.
I would expect all of the above to understand how the internet works.
if they did not have their own websites then I would not hire them.
If they were not a member of at least one mailing list then I would
not hire them.
I would hire a perl programmer (one with extensive web experience
doing many things and there are many such people) to work with all of
the above to assist all of the above in creating the website.
And recall that the architect has already planned the entire project.
He will now give to each of the above the job they have to do.
I have seen so many cases where a designer or account executive is
given the job of actually planning something.
If I were to hire an entry level Developer I would ask myself which
category he will belong:
programmer
designer
writer
perl programmer/integrator
architect
If you just want another body to just help out in any of the above
categories then go for the perl person.
