OK, I'll accept that. I don't have any personal experience with it,
but friends whose opinions I respect are fanatics. I'm thinking of
trying it on my home automation/ISDN/CD-changer server PC in the
basement.

Here you start to lose me. Apps are what sells PCs, not the goodness
of their OS. As a minimum, Linux has to have a web browser, spreadsheet,
word processor, and presentation editor. The browser has to support
the full W3C HTML 4, DOM, and ECMAScript and the last three have to
have the same level of functionality as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
and support import of their files. (I had an email processor in the
list, but would prefer to have that and newsgroups supported through
the browser).
Without these, Linux could be the greatest thing since Multics,
but no one is going to buy it. Why should they?

See, this is the problem with the wild-eyed, knee-jerk, fanatic
paranoid approach to rational discourse. You say something that
makes a bit of sense, then follow it up with juvenile misspellings
like "Internet Exploder" or "MS Wondoze," gratuitous insults of
Gates or Jobs, or terminally-silly statements like the "progress
of computing" thing above. Sure, I used to talk about "Amerika"
and "baby-killers" in my wild-eyed, knee-jerk, fanatic paranoid
rants against the Vietnam War, but that was OK because I was right.
Also young.
