        If you recall the caricature of Charlie Chaplin the appeared on the
various IBM ads of a few years ago using the "latest" business solutions
from IBM to organize his "Hat-of-the-Month", "Cake-of-the-Month", etc
clubs, the prospect of using "business applications" was pushed real
hard.  IMHO, management has come to depend on solutions provided rather
than doing a rational objective analysis of their process.  Most people
arrive in their "management" positions as a result of excellence in
their field; not necessarily an ability to "manage".

        Business applications are tools to be used to help run a business. 
Used incorrectly, they become the tail wagging the dog rather than the
dog wagging the tail.

        BTW, Rick, your comments hit home as I am currently mired in what I
consider management ineptness in applying "business applications" to
business tasks with no idea as to what needs to be done; only that
providing these "business applications" will achieve automation.
