yeah, this is a nagging problem.  I saw on /. the other day that there's
a movement afoot to get printer manufacturers to accept the idea of a
standard driver that resided in the hardware so there was a common
interface. Essentially, it sounds like they need to move some
proprietary stuff out of the way and into software so people can tap
such an interface, and the printer industry is dragging their feet.

but, once they get into the sights of the Linux community, maybe the
momentum will give them pause to rethink things.  :)
