Well actually, there is another way of doing this, just as intuitive and
simple as the method outlined above:

<tongue type="firmly in cheek">

1. Run Explorer (the file Explorer, not the Internet Explorer)

2. Highlight a file of the type that you want to associate with a given
application.

3. Select 'View' from the Explorer (the file Explorer, not the Internet
Explorer) menu

4. Select 'Options' from the drop-down menu that appears.

5. Make sure that "Show extensions" is checked in the Option dialog box
that appears.

6. Then select the "File Types" tab.

7. Scroll through the six zillion file-types that display until you find the one
you want. Note that it may be listed under some totally unintuitive title
that doesn't mention the actual file extension in question.

8. Click "Edit"

9. Click "New"

10. Type in "open" in the 'Action' box

11. Then click on "Browse" to dig through your entire hard drive to find the
application you want.

12. Whack "OK" a few times.

13. You're done, unless your editing has created some fatal error in the
Registry, in which case you're screwed.

There.  Wasn't that easy??

</tongue>

Gawd. Is it any wonder I still do most of my file management stuff with a
DOS utility I first downloaded ten years ago?

Gimme an L! Gimme an I! Gimme an N! Gimme a U! Gimme an X!  What's
that spell??   "Death to Windows!!"
