Thanks to all who contributed their useful feedback on my original 
question... based on your rough consensus of opinion, it looks like I'm 
going to wander down to Computer City to pick up the latest RedHat CD-
ROM, thence into the murky and unfamiliar waters of Linuxdom.

By happy coincidence my ex just bought a new PC, and so doesn't need 
the old 386 I gave her a couple of years ago; guess I'll take that machine 
back and use it as my Linux testbed for now.  What the heck, I may even 
set it up as a server just for the pure perilous fun (and educational value) 
of it.

Be prepared for occasional strangled calls for help from me in the coming 
weeks <g>
