I would really urge all to read the FTC's proposal rather than engage in a
philosophical discussion of something they didn't take up nor plan to take
up. Focused thought will go a lot farther to answer what they state than
considering old cases on issues not presently in debate. We are talking
protection of privacy and it is an issue currently being taken up by the
FTC, the Department of Commerce, and various European commissions. It is
a serious problem with the capability of gathering information on the Net.
I know that as we watch medical sites we note that more and more often
they entrap patients into disclosing information which is then provided
by, if not collected initially by medical insurance companies. All that
need be done is to make a kindly request to write about your own problem
and a free opinion will be forthcoming. I don't know about their opinion
but you just told them your name and address and part of your medical
history you wouldn't dare tell your next door neighbor about. There is a
problem out there, but not the one discussed here.
