I agree strongly with just about everything in this analysis. AOL has
been a parasite on the web since the day it got plugged into the 'net --
taking, taking, taking, and giving nothing in return but headaches,
starting with their braindead browser and ending with their consistent
practice of blaming other Internet sites/services for outages that
are clearly AOL's fault. Their "AOL is the Internet" ad campaign
is offensive. Their security is non-existent, their respect
for privacy a joke, and their token anti-abuse efforts are ineffective.
They consistently lie about their membership figures. They're still
under investigation by a number of state attorney generals for their
business practices, including their practice of continuing to charge
members who cancel their service.

I've even been forwarded copies of my own copyrighted FAQs that
have had my information stripped off them and been relabeled as
AOL's proprietary content.

Yet AOL has its clueless newbie loyalist defenders who think that
it is somehow the magical pinnacle of the 'net, and that Steve Case
is a genius. Feh. Blech. And other terms of derision.

This is the best one-line summary of AOL that I've ever seen.
