It's been interesting to watch as the predictions of a massive shake-out
in the ISP market just haven't turned out to be right. Oh, there have
been mergers and buyouts even at the mom-and-pop level; and some providers
have grown to middle size (e.g. Erols), dominating chunks of the market;
but the consolidation down to half a dozen just hasn't happened.
I don't think it will: I think once these organizations exceed a certain
size, their inertia prevents them from responding to rapid shifts in
the market, making them vulnerable to smaller, more nimble competitors.
