I am attempting to re-install Win95 on a Compaq laptop. I have just wiped
the hard drive [Win98 had been there] and am booting off A: with the Win95
boot floppy. I have copied the Win95 CDROM files onto a zip disk - as I
couldn't find the CDrom driver when I was doing backup (the system was
corrupted and would not allow me to show hidden files or file extensions -
sigh - and i only recently thought, damn, i could've found it under DOS).
I boot up; fine. I use Zip floppy to set up D as zip drive; fine. I
initiate setup; fine.
Then, in the first quarter of SetupWizard - I get this message [paraphrase]
there is a problem with c:\wininsto.400\locale.inf. it is corrupted or not
present. increase your swap filesize or free up memory.
HUH?
I got this error even after copying all the files on C: and trying to
install from C instead of D.
A couple times I got "cannot decrompress *.cab file"... but that went away
after a couple of reboots. The swapfile error message is persistent (4
attempts to install windows for a total of *6* attempts).
Suggestions or help appreciated. Throwing the computer out the window is,
unfortunately, not an option.
