I, given more my attitude than experience, would say that the linux 
or bsdi route would be at least less expensive. I believe that bsdi 
costs about US$1,000.00 but it includes many features that would be 
additional to an NT server.  Here is an old comparison on the bsdi

At iserver they use bsdi and it works great.  But there must be a 
newer comparison somewhere.

I think that given the money, expertise, and hardware one could 
create a solution that works with NT.  It would be interesting to 
note the major sites which use NT vs. Unices.
