addendum - merchant accounts typically pay 2-3% per transaction to visa/mc
and up to 5% to mx (don't know about discover). PLUS there is a minimum
monthly charge for the service. and often a set up charge as well.
for a low volume e-commerce site, the 8% sounds pretty reasonable. not for
high volume, tho, where the monthly charge becomes a "wash" -- and at that
point, you change contracts -- or renegotiate.
i'd find the 8% reasonable for speakers, etc. who want to offer their
materials online - but don't have any idea what kind of volume they will
generate.
