It's coming. Consider the new "video disk recorders" that record
video to hard disk. There are at least two commercial set-top
boxes that do this, as will my ATI All-in-Wonder graphics card.
I can record about 3 hours of video onto the 6GB of free space I
have on my drive. Suppose I record a show and then go through it
and note the exact times that commercials start and stop. Further
suppose that I put this little table of times on the web, and other
people who have recorded the same show download it and use it to
edit out or instantaneously skip the commercials. This could even
be done in near-real-time: I could record and upload the times
while the program is being broadcast, and people recording it
could start watching 10-12 minutes after it starts being
broadcast (and they start recording it). They would download
and use the commercial timings immediately after I upload them.
They should end up watching the closing credits as they're being
broadcast, having caught up with real time.
(My apologies if I've mentioned this here before.)
