It does make sense if you do more than just hosting an app and MySQL.
Having to physically GO to a datacenter doesn't seem like a good
idea for a frigging mini. My *time* would be more expensive than the
machine...
I had to go to the hosting center for the Mini exactly one time - to
set it up there. Since then it is running without any trouble.
Most hosting centers also provide ways of remotely restarting a machine.
So, YMMV. For me, using a Linux server, getting it set up properly,
getting all other services I use up and running properly wouldn't be
worth the time. Because my time is too expensive for dealing with that.
It's just something that works for one person but not the next. So,
for you a cloud deploy might work, for me it wouldn't ... Everybody
will have to decide that depending on the requirements, the project
and so on.
