It does make sense if you do more than just hosting an app and MySQL.

You mean mail server? What else?

I use a couple of the OS X integrated services. And a mail server. Yes.

I had to go to the hosting center for the Mini exactly one time - to set it up there. Since then it is running without any trouble.

But you ARE aware that the disks in a mini aren't exactly server- grade, are you? How do you run backups? Handle disaster recovery? Restores in general?

Absolutely. My Mac Mini, which has no commercial app on it whatsoever, has probably better backup and handling of problems than a lot of production servers for apps out there where their respective owners will have serious trouble if the service goes down. If that Mini goes down for a day, I don't care. But it doesn't as no one but me is screwing around with it.

And the harddrive issue is about as old as the Mac Mini as a system itself. It's a known problem and anybody running a crucial service on it without having just-in-time recovery will run into problems one day.

Meaning you use OS X server ? which is like 500 $... and isn't that great to begin with.

Yeah, that can be really bad - unless you buy the previous version used. Or have it sitting around from old servers.

I don't wanna start a flame war

At least with me - you can't. First and foremost, we don't really disagree. Second, I don't care how you do your deployment. I do mine in a way that was and still is reasonable for me and my private stuff and I don't really care what others think about that.

You shouldn't assume that everything WO has to earn money ... I certainly never said that my Mini is running commercial apps.
