Frankly, hosting your own machine is not nothing I think makes
sense - except for the case you need core image or some other OSX
only thing. Pure app-/db-server stuff is most likely better dealt
with a linux box.
It does make sense if you do more than just hosting an app and MySQL.
You mean mail server? What else?
Having to physically GO to a datacenter doesn't seem like a good
idea for a frigging mini. My *time* would be more expensive than
the machine...
I had to go to the hosting center for the Mini exactly one time - to
set it up there. Since then it is running without any trouble.
But you ARE aware that the disks in a mini aren't exactly server-
grade, are you? How do you run backups? Handle disaster recovery?
Restores in general?
So, YMMV. For me, using a Linux server, getting it set up properly,
getting all other services I use up and running properly wouldn't be
worth the time. Because my time is too expensive for dealing with
that.
Meaning you use OS X server ? which is like 500 $... and isn't that
great to begin with.
I don't wanna start a flame war, but really, I would only hot on a
mini (or my spare PB) if it was from my place and with a service I
could care less about. Certainly not something I would rely on making
money...
Cheers, Anjo
