Follow-up Comment #2, bug #9526 (project wesnoth):

Thank you, alink.

For what it's worth, and as feedback for potential future discussion, I'll
add one thing to what I already wrote.

- As said, the important thing, IMO, is that people should be able to
_intuitively_ understand it right. What's right for who, however, we can't
control.
- The reason for this, what I referred to earlier as "legitimate reasons", is
that the graphics can easily be understood in at least two different ways.
(The explanation below proceeds from a "north of the tropic of cancer"
viewpoint, _and_ from the assumption of "north at top" in a map
representation. Change the directions for other assumptions - as said, people
can understand this in a number of ways.)

- One way, which I will define the _"realistic representation",_ is to
understand the images as what you would really observe, _concretely_ looking
at the landscape. (This implies, in the north, that you'd be looking south.)
The sun is at your _left_ in the morning, directly _in front_ of you at noon,
and at your _right_ in the evening.

- The other way, which I will define as _"symbolic representation",_ is to
understand the images as a map-based (i.e. symbolic) representation, based on
the standard "north at the top" map convention. This is a more _abstract,_
concept-based way of understanding the issue. In this case, east, where the
sun rises, is at the _right,_ the sun is again in the _middle_ (still,
symbolically) at noon. Finally in the evening, the sun sets in the west,
which is on the _left_ in the symbolic representation.

(By the way, I've always wanted an "Australian" globe map, with south on top,
to put alongside my standard globe map :-)

In sum, I hope this helps someone better understand the _reasons_ why this
issue actually gets interpreted differently by different people. (It may
depend on various factors, e.g. how "concretely" or "abstractly" they think
about the issue. Neither of these alternatives can, IMO, be said to be
"false".)

This explanation may give insight to why this option was and is so wanted,
and why keeping it would be justified. (...instead of imposing one way as the
only correct way to understand the directions.)

As a sidenote, OAB initially and primarily applies to gameplay rules, and
only secondarily to the UI. I know there are different opinions about the
reach of OAB, though. However, that's minor, and not terribly relevant to
this issue, so I hope we don't have to reach an agreement about that in this
context.
