Follow-up Comment #1:

First: thanks for reporting this!

You're right, I should've tested on another computer - and in fact, I didn't
test it on my own computer (mainly because I had no reason to believe it
wouldn't work). However, I did test it now on my own computer, and I got
someone else to test it, and it worked for them as well. When I get info on
the alias, it says "Original: /Applications", which is what it should be, and
I don't see how a different computer could change that (unless you
renamed/moved your Applications folder).

Your could-not-be-moved.tiff screen shot is interesting though... It seems
weird that it could have both that and the other error. That error seems to
imply to me: the Applications folder that it's an alias to does exist, but
you're not allowed to modify it - are you an admin user? But of course, the
other error contradicts that.

Did you try dragging it to your /Applications folder without the alias? And
do you normally install programs there, or in your home Applications folder?

Incidentally, I made this dmg with DMG Canvas. Its DMG is similar (I'm
actually in the middle of making a new background that's very similar to its
one), including an alias to /Applications. I wonder if you could try
installing DMG Canvas and see if that works?
