Follow-up Comment #12, bug #17573 (project wesnoth):

This version of the patch uses a chunk of memory as large as the screen
surface, which should catch more of the possible errors in overlapping memory
locations, regardless of the processor architecture.  This is probably what
Richard intended.  

It works as is, but isn't tidy.  I'll bracket the sections of code with some
#ifdefs and move the code into sdl_utils where it more likely belongs later.

Richard, if I have stepped on your toes and/or sub-standardly implemented
your ideas, I apologize.
