I just went through trunk cleaning up gcc 4.3 (on fedora rawhide) warnings
so that trunk will build with the treat warnings as error option.
I found a few bugs, but mostly it was just adding redundant parens and
braces in places where it is easy to make a mistake.

Should this be done in the 1.4 branch as well?

If so would it be better to do it as one big commit (excepting actual
bug fixes) or as a bunch of little ones or by the type of warning being
fixed (the last is harder though)?
