Ok I downloaded and installed Whatsup Gold 8.03

Set up a new Map and a New device, I'm still unable to ping my router.

In 8.03 I went to the Net Tools and was able to ping the router (and any other device). I tried a packet size from 100 to 3000 without any problems.

OK, you ran into a separate defect here. One that affects every version of WhatsUp Gold from v4.05 (at least) up to v8.03, where it was fixed.

Small packet sizes cause the following problems:

1) Size 1-13. No ping occurs. Client reports (in List View):

failed, retcode = 122 (It doesn't appear this application was installed properly with Install!)

2) Size 14-27 WUG performs a valid ping and receives a valid response (tested using packet analyzer), but displays the following:

failed, retcode = 11001 (Host name not resolved)

This response occurs for pinging both an IP address or a Fully Qualified Domain Name.

This did not seem to be a serious problem because no user reported it and there were no obvious use cases for needing small packets.

Anyway, as I mentioned above, this was fixed in v8.03 as a consequence of implementing the ability to control the packet size via the registry.

Concerning Nettools, you say "anything over 30 works". Does this hold true for larger sizes, as you go over 50? If there is a cut-off point then you maybe have a filter in place after all. The solution for that might be to upgrade to v8.03 so that you can get the device monitoring ICMP packets to the right size. You can download an Eval of v8.03 to test out this hypothesis.

Of course, the best reason to upgrade would be to take advantage of all the v8.0x goodies like the Event system.

Don't worry about log management... that's to control how logs get placed into the archive directory.

As for the debug log, it's aways available via Logs -> Debug Log. It does not have to be configured. However, what it shows you is live info.. you cant open the window and scroll back. You can only open the window and watch things "time forward".

Subject: RE: [WhatsUp Forum] Ping help

I'm monitoring devices on our network. There are no filters.

When I go to NetTools and ping everything works. Changing the packet size
to 25 and lower fails, anything over 30 works.

There's nothing in the Debug log. How do you turn this on? Under Program
Options, Logging I have Log Type: Whatsup Event Log and no log management.
Is this the correct settings?

I need to be able to monitor with ping, because I want to monitor our up
stream providers router.

Thanks for your help.

Brian

PS I've been using Whatsup (and then Whatsup Gold) since the program was
first released (maybe 10 years), it's a great program.
