that's fine, but i think we should wait to expose that until someone actually asks for it.
i have some doubts about its usefulness...

Agreed. It would be nice though to - ultimately - give users full control if they really want it. But the defaults (the map in this case) should be good for 95% of the cases.

i guess what i'm trying to say is that if you specify "this is in dutch",
you shouldn't also have to specify charset. that's implied by locale
(as turbine demonstrates). at worst, we should be able to rip off the turbine CharSetMap logic somehow and find the charset ourselves. besides keeping the API trimmer, it will mean less questions from users.

i'm still looking for a more legit API method, but turbine took this approach:

it's been a while since i looked at the source, but i'm pretty sure any
file will be loaded within the context of a request, which should
indirectly have a locale, which should, in turn, be mappable to a charset
somehow. is that not possible? my point is simply that this ought to be
automatic, if at all possible. let's not increase our API surface area if
there is a way around it.

The default locale for the application, instead of using the JVM default (which is taken from the OS). Yes, from my point of view it makes sense. Use of JVM locale only if not set in apps setting. +1
Localization seems to open a whole lot of new questions. Jon mentioned
that javac -encoding may be used to define the charset used to read
java sources, in case they are not stored in OS (JVM) default locale.
The same is probably true for HTML markup. Currently a Stream is used
to read them and to forward them to ServletOutputStream. Streams are
byte oriented and not charset aware. Using special characters like
within markup files will eventually fail if not compliant with the
default locale, because Wicket/servlet container does not know it. May
I suggest we use a Reader instead of a Stream to read the markup file
and add a charset config to application settings to define the
encoding to be used while reading (e.g. new InputStreamReader(new
InputStream(file), "utf-8").
