If history/logs/etc displayed "username at the time" rather than "username as it is now", then you could square this circle - encourage renaming from User:Jane_Smith to User:Jane_Smith_(Megacorp) then back to User:Jane_Smith, in order to accomodate changes over time. Of course, this would have other side-effects - the rename-to-vanish or rename-for-privacy method we currently use would be impossible, for one thing...
