Hi Guys,
I don't know about anybody else, but I'm as confused as hell by this
thread now !!
Can we at least agree about what we mean when we say "Identity" !
To me this is simply an Email address that I use. It could be one of
many that I am known by.
The same thing when we refer to a Mail server.
To me this is the machine that allows me to send Emails and usually
belongs to my ISP. It also 'may' have a POP mailbox on it, from
which I would collect Email sent to me at my ISP's domain. It could
be one of many Mail Servers, having POP mailboxes that I collect
mail from that do not belong to my ISP.
My mail client, ie Pegasus for example, will collect my mail by
polling any or all Mail servers at my request. It will conditionally
filter my mail into folders as I require. Any mail not filtered into
a specific folder will remain in my in-box to be filtered manually.
Each folder can have none, or one or more specific Identities
associated with it. A default identity for the folder being the one
used to reply to Email in that folder, unless changed by me.
All Email that I send will be sent via my ISP's Mail Server. I can
have several ISP's and can send some or all my mail via any one of
them.
I can have several Outboxes, each one associated with a specific ISP.
By placing my outgoing Email into a specific Outbox I can choose
which ISP I use to send my mail.
I wonder if this makes sense of the confusion ?
