What's amiss?  There is essentially *NO* mapping between pop mailboxes 
and identity/accounts for folk with any but the most simple email setups.
So why should the email client be hardwired to make shot-in-the-dark 
guesses that'll likely be wrong [again, except for folk with the very 
simplest of email setups].

Perhaps you have a different slice on the user community, but virtually 
everybody I know [even folk who have hardly a clue about how email works 
at all], have many-to-one email setups [that is, where many email 
addresses converge on a single POP box].  For folk with that situation, 
having their email client guess about an identity to use is basically 
useless.  For someone like me, with a complicated many-to-many email 
setup, having the email client trying to guess something like that is not 
even a feeble joke...
