And that's the problem.. they no longer ship recovery cd's and apparently don't
even keep any in stock.

If it weren't for the drivers and some software, I wouldn't bother - I'd blow
the partitions away (including the 32 meg in the front, 300+ at the back) and
just install windows xp pro clean... but it's a new machine and I'm not
familiar with all of the hardware yet and want to restore it so I can inventory
it. I planned to use it as a 'play around' machine for a few months before
going clean. Then I just have the DVD software to fuss with (based on the lame
methods some vendors attempt to block installs on some OSs and systems, I think
if I crack open the install exe and extract the msi, I can run the msi to
install it.) Or, after a few months use I might decide I like the DVD/RW enough
to want to buy the full version... or that it's crap and want better software.

But for now, the Dell help desk is a fun distraction and a lesson in corporate
stupidity - will they really RMA the system instead of sending me a cd? <g>
They coulda saved so much time, effort and money if they'd just sent me a
recovery cd when I first asked for one. It's almost enough for me to start a
personal blog... between this, a raccoon, and RoadRunner, I think I have some
good stories to tell. <g>

Now to dig out my XPPE....

You need the Dell recovery CD that came with that system
