Now I hear here that we have to install SP1 first. I don't know if our
systems have SP1. In any case I can't use the organizations systems to
download.

I'll assume you think "I" said that...(?)
All I tried to say (and thought I said) was that you need to have
SP1 or SP2 to use Windows Update, (I'll add the new MicrosoftUpdate now too.)
This was when I was only talking about SP2, and WAS assuming you were
talking about WinXP. (No harm done...)
For anyone that does NOT have SP1 installed, SP2 INCLUDES that,
and because of backup functions, un-install functions, and storage requirements,
it is NOT a good idea to install SP1 first, ASSUMING a move to SP2 will be
almost immediate...
IF, OTOH, SP2 is NOT in the immediate future, then it IS still a good idea to
install SP1 since lots of the problems with it were fixed by now... BUT!!!!!
Warning about ONLY SP1 though... The things your company "seems to be doing",
which can only be guessed at (or assumed since details were sketchy, to say the
least),
WERE the VERY things "early" adopters were having the most trouble with...
Summary: If this is a work computer, I'd keep my hands out of it... If they
have strong company rules about this, I'd be even more careful about it...
If being more careful than doing nothing is even possible...
(I guess that means I would not even THINK about it... <grin>.......
I'll do my last "assuming" again, and assume this "whole idea" of you getting
involved (in this) is a bad one...
"Seems like" they should have people that "should know" how to do this and
might not want "help" from someone with lots less experience...
I love it when people ignore my advise and they trash a job... Especially
if they ASKED for it. and ignored it... Volunteered advise carries much less
weight in most cases, and less responsibility...
