We are now switching to some sort of strange limited/filtered Internet
connection which I don't understand -- and some have been receiving
viruses. The organization is allegedly working on protection, and most of
us have recently installed virus protection, however, some of us are
saying that we should "upgrade" to SP2 which has firewall protection of
some sort.

Since we're talking about machines belonging to an organization, shouldn't
a designated IT person be making this decision? If individuals are allowed
to update/modify their organization's machines on an ad hoc basis, you could wind up with a non-interoperable network.

If you decide to go ahead with the SP2 upgrade, be sure to put it on
only one test machine at first. There might be some strange interactions
between SP2's firewall and whatever is providing the organization's
"strange limited/filtered Internet."
