Hi Jeanne -

Tim S. provided the rationale for shared RAM. As to cost, I don't know what
type RAM the machine uses, but if it is PC2700, these days it is not hard to
find 256MB on sale for $20 or less (sometimes MUCH less if you know how to
work the deals) or 512MB should go for around $40 or less on sale.

If it is PC3200, it may be slightly higher, but most RAM is (to me)
unbelievably cheap. With Win XP, even with no share, you will find the
machine plays better with at least 512MB, but unless you put it under a lot
more stress than you indicated, 512MB even with the sharing should do fine.

Subject: [WINHOME] Shared memory

Greetings,

I'm looking at a cheap deal on a Dell Dimension 3000 for $449 for my kids.
It's a P4 2.8G and includes a 17" flat-panel display. No DVD but I can add
that. The only thing that's really giving me pause is 256MB of shared
memory. I'd up the RAM to 512, but Is 'shared' a bad thing? The machine will
be used for some minor gaming, homework, WP, etc.
