Hi Jeanne - Tim S. provided the rationale for shared RAM. As to cost, I don't know what type RAM the machine uses, but if it is PC2700, these days it is not hard to find 256MB on sale for $20 or less (sometimes MUCH less if you know how to work the deals) or 512MB should go for around $40 or less on sale.
If it is PC3200, it may be slightly higher, but most RAM is (to me) unbelievably cheap.
