I bought a HP Pavilion a640n last September which came with a nVidia (I think) 
card
with 128MB of memory. You might be able to find a good price on a system which
includes a video card. I suppose shared video would be fine for homework but I'm
not certain about gaming. I suspect I have much more computing power than I
"really" need, but I like it. :-)  

Assuming the system is new, can it be returned within 30 days if you aren't 
happy
with the performance? I suppose a restocking fee might be prohibitive.  Perhaps
some of the system builders on the list have a thought or two...
