Dell laptops have a way to disable the touchpad if a PS2 mouse is isntalled in the BIOS. However, unless this has been changed, the use of a USB mouse does not have the same result.
Newer models may have a setting in the BIOS for both USB and PS2 so look carefully. Other brands may have similar options.
