I found out the hard way with Adaptec DirectCD (which I purchased separately
for $80 after spending $600 on a Yamaha 426 CDRW (4x write, 2x re-write, 6x
read, IIRC) SCSI drive many years ago). The DirectCD written drives were hit
and miss to access later.

Could you explain this comment further? What is -R mode versus -RW mode?
What do you mean by "cycle of -RW platters?"
