Catch??? Nonsense, locally (Vancouver, BC, Canada) I can get oem NEC 3520A or 
Pioneer 110D drives for cd$60-$70, on sale the same drives can be had for 
cd$48 or less.

These are top of the line drives in perfomance and features. Check web 
reviews.  You can also buy the same drives in retail boxes at Staples, 
FutureShop/BestBuy for $100 more if you are so inclined.  Personally I'd 
rather spend that $100 on buying a full suite of burning software that I 
like.
