To rule out a coincidental failure of the monitor or video hardware, try
another monitor. If no help, beg/borrow a video card from someone, and
replace the existing video card (or, disable the on-board video, or make the
add-on video card the primary video), and see if that gets you into VGA
mode. Then uninstall whatever video drivers are listed in Add/Remove
Programs.

Another thing, if your video is on embedded or built-in to the motherboard,
try resetting the motherboard BIOS to factory defaults.

To continue the theme of uninstalling SP2, another possibility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350
Scroll down and follow the instructions under "Use Recovery Console". This
doesn't require any graphical video modes.

Of course, some time ago in this troubleshooting, I'd have already restored
the image backup taken before installing SP2... You may want to use an
offline imaging program before trying the recovery console uninstall of SP2,
since that could conceivably make things worse! (it'll either cure ya or
kill ya...)

Will try to remove SP2. Most of the instructions here, however, require one
to be able to access a Windows screen, and this machine can't - it's just
black.
