The event viewer contains a history of things that have happened. It does
not require maintenance. The file that holds the history is automatically
purged when items get too old or when the file exceeds a certain size.
Allowing items to remain - or removing all items - does not cause other
prblems.

If you have errors and are concerned about them, you need to provide at
minimum the following information from reading the entries:
a) Event ID
b) Event Source
c) How often that event is being reported.
d) Relationship of this event to other logged events (e.g. it's always event
51, followed by event 3704 at about the same timestamp)

You can get self-help on event entries at www.eventid.net.

Also on deleting events from the Event Viewer, you cannot delete specific
entries. You can clear the entire history (in each category), but as I said
before, there's no reason to do that. If you get the same errors logged
over and over, it will just fill up again.

The Performance and Processes tab of Task Manager (taskmgr.exe) are your
friends. Look for low amounts of Available Physical Memory, or large
numbers for Commit Charge Total. Look for Processes using high percentages
of CPU.

Does the hard drive light stay turned on continuously (or nearly so) while
the system is being slow? If so check in Event Viewer under System for
errors. A failing hard disk could cause the behavior you describe.

My PC is not running slow, but following your directions and curious, I
looked for errors under Event Viewer and found that I had 774 errors under
the Applications tab, 2,442 under the System tab and 774 under the Saved
Application Log tab (think these are duplicates of Application Tab, they
look the same). Are these necessary to leave in the corresponding tabs or
can they be deleted safely.
Thank you
