The big names:
http://www.aim.com is AOL Instant Messenger.
http://www.google.com/talk/ is Google Talk
http://join.msn.com/messenger/overview is MSN Messenger
http://www.icq.com/ is ICQ
http://messenger.yahoo.com/ is Yahoo Messenger
Did I miss any?
You can sign up for an account at any of those sites I believe (or
maybe even from within Trillian) and continue using Trillian for IRC
plus chat.
If she only uses one chat service it may be overkill to use Trillian.
The question really is which one to choose and that probably comes
down to what all of her friends and family use which brings us back to
Trillian. That would allow her to chat on all mediums in one
interface.

Hi,
My daughter is heading off to college next fall and I have a question about
Instant Messenger. I have no experience with the software/services, etc. I
have been using Trilliam for IRC and understand it has an IM capability. I
have comcast cable broadband and she will be connected to the school
network. What would we need to be able to IM each other? TIA.
