Everything I ask about is above my level of (demonstrated) expertise. I.e., if I knew how to do it, why would I ask?

Please feel free to ask but my whole point is that NO ONE gets expertise until they try. Maybe they'll have to do it several times until they succeed but until one stops the questions & starts trying
one will NEVER know if the could or couldn't do whatever it is.

How can I go to a "customer" site to solve a problem when I don't know what I'm
doing?

If one never does a thing then they'll never have a question & whether one calls an obstacle a minor nuisance or a mountain is predominantly in their mind's eye but all can be overcome. You're correct in that it may take a while but until one applies them self then they'll never know.

You're getting a little carried away, pal. I have a lifetime of being a leader
in my work -- from introducing digital electronics into our electronics
engineering technology curriculum to teaching myself BASIC, FORTRAN, C, Z80
assembly language, etc. to writing a CBIOS for a CP/M system to developing an
energy control system for electrical devices at a small business.

The situation here is different.
