Hi Eve,

I use Computer Associates' stuff: EZ-Armor initially, now their Internet Security suite, & they sell all the bits separately. I personally stopped using Norton 3 years ago, as it was too resource-hungry (read as: the PC would do nothing else!). I've sold most of my clients (enfin, both of them ;-) on CA, with no negative feed-back so far.

As far as removing AV apps goes, my first choice is their uninstall procedure, next is Windows "remove programs", then a remover from the vendor's site, & lastly, a session with regedit (save this for your best hour in the day, having first backed up your registry, of course!). Works for me, but YMMV!

I have managed to remove pre-installed Norton from a couple of new machines using the AV's uninstall procedure: this seems to work OK if you catch it within the first couple of months. After that, I guess it gets a bit genetic, & you have to chase it away some other how.

Regards,

Richard.be

What are your LEAST favorite apps?

I have a reason for asking. McAfee came on my most recent computer. It's the bane of my life. It's taken me an hour to boot up this morning what with all the startings and stoppings and rebootings and changing the default browser to IE because McAfee can't (do you believe this) use firefox.

I can't stand it any more. It screws up every time I try to uninstall it, but this time I'm going to take it off. I don't like Norton either, although I don't hate it the way I hate McAfee.

What do you guys use for antivirus? I don't really care about their "privacy" and "spamkiller" stuff. I can deal with spam and I'll just go back to Zone Alarm.
