I agree. I set up many computers for folks who have bought new ones. I am
beginning to think that the problem is not enabling the whole suite when you
first install. Whenever I allow it to install only AV and firewall, there
are problems. The spam filter is a nightmare, so I don't usually let it
install. Unfortunately, McAfee sees that as a problem and you start getting
error messages. On the other hand, when we uninstall it after 90 days and
install from a boxed version, no one seems to have very many problems with
it. I had problems getting it to update on one computer because of an
e-mail glitch, but for the most part it has been reliable.

On the other hand, Norton irritated me so much with the 2005 version that
SAID it worked on 98se and didn't (locked up several of my clients'
computers), that I swore never to buy their products again.

Yes, I know there are others, but most of my clients can't be trusted to run
updates and monitor their AV programs.

I do, not because i tried, but because i know how awful McAfee is when
preinstalled. You have no protection and no updated defs until you register
for an account with them and if you had a previous free trial included with
another oem box, you need a new email address to register the new account -
it doesn't use a 'machine id' to know it's a new machine. Uninstalling it
takes at least 3 reboots too... they really suck.

OEM norton works out of the box for 90 days and gets updated defs- no
invasive registration. It just works. Even after a system restore...
