Forgive my ignorance, but logging in to what via the

How do you think you access shared resources (files/folders
and/or printers) on a lan? By magic?
But what does logging in have to do with printers and file
sharing? (I've obviously got a big gap in my knowledge here. :-))
I don't understand how your answer relates to my questions.
1) When you log in via the network, what do you log in to?
2) If a person gained access to your wireless gateway/cable modem
via an unsecured wireless access point, what could he do to the
computers on the LAN?
Thanks.
