Then it's not an engine update. Sounds like your AVG may be
corrupted. As others already suggested, uninstall and reinstall.
If that doesn't fix it, try a different AV, like Avast.

How long does the incident last? AV programs need to update
their engine (core code) occasionally, which requires them to
shut down for 30 seconds or so.
