Why are they charging for self-install???? If I recall, the self-install uses a mucked-up version of IE and sets a bunch
of things you may not wish to have. I believe that you can
connect to the modem directly and set the parameters.

i think it's shipping/handling on the router. I don't what
anything installed on the computers but apparently they want
you to install some crap. I have a feeling i might end up back
here to set it up... too bad next week is chicago to visit
another daughter.

My stepson has the aforementioned RCA425 cable modem and a
WAP to connect a Ethernet-ed desktop and a wireless
notebook.

so this is the one computer modem? so we should get the one
cable option and our own router. (It's a good thing the kids
still at home are using my travel router for the summer,
otherwise i'd probably lose another one. :))

Yes. He has a WAP that has an Ethernet port or two, and uses the E-port on the modem to connect to the WAP which also serves as a router.

If she's got wireless toys, I'd suggest that approach. However, the 2-5 cable "modem" is both wireless and E'net.
