As mentioned, if you set the fax to answer after says 6 rings and answering 
machine to answer after 4 rings, with SOME fax machines, they'll hear the 
tone and answer.

Another option is smartring/distinctive ring, a service from your telco which 
gives you a second phone number on the same line. The 2nd phone number rings 
differently than normal, and most modern fax machines and all-in-one's can be 
set to ONLY answer the distinctive ring. That way you don't have to work 
about answering machines and the like.

In this case you set the answering machine to answer after say 4 rings and 
the fax to answer the disctinctive ring after 1 or 2 rings.
