Pete, I don't want to be difficult or beat this to death but
isn't the only difference between a wall mounted phone and a
desk top phone those two screws they add to allow phones to
be wall mounted?

So, couldn't you buy another "cheapie" phone and make that
your wall mounted phone and then put your current answering
machine on your desk where your all-in-one is?

My desk is too small.

None of this would be necessary if the damned all-in-one
didn't seem to require the answering machine to be plugged
into it in order for it to work the way it should with an
existing answering machine not plugged into it. Jerry.

Here's what I think someone has been saying happens.

Phone rings and no one picks up.

After 4 rings, the answering machine picks up.

After 2 more rings, the fax machine picks up. If it detects a fax modem sending, it responds. Otherwise it hangs up.

Eventually the answering machine hangs up, having recorded the fax "conversation".

Is that what happens?

If so, why does it matter where the answering machine is?
