Finally someone who understands what I'm talking about :) The LP Model DR4812W claims to use either -RW +RW. I have found +RW to be more reliable. Once after recording a program, the thing just sat there a refused to either eject or turn off. I came back an hour later, and it still was trying to do something to the disk - I pulled the plug. Got it out after I plugged it in, and crawled back out from under the table (yep it was hard wired into the back). The DVD looked kinda shinny - but I got it working again. One of my +RW disks. 3 other disks I have had problems with are all the same brand and -RW.
I've decided to experiment a little and will try a variety of +RW brands - I've given up on -RW. As for my original problem it seems to have morphed into something else. I took 2 -RW Mitsubishi DVD disks back to the store I bought the DVD recorder from, and after explaining several times to different folk, I got some surprising results. It turns out MY DVD recorder isn't a flash one (cheap). The more expensive machine formatted the disks to a useable state. Not wishing to risk losing recorded shows, formatted them with INCD and tested the result. Normal files were ok, but on the second I put some music files MPG and that worked ok too. Go to bed - the next day - turn the puter on and watch the DVD light blink and not stop. I just ignore this and finish watching the news. Sometime later I open my music player to play a song from the disk still in the computer, and I get a 'can't open file' message - same for the several other players I have installed. I look at the files and half have zero size! I try to copy the same files over them, but the copy is stopped with a "can't copy or move read only files" message! None of the files are read only, nor are they special in any way. These files were created by me with Nero, to capture video from my own VHS tapes. I'll leave out all things I tried, to save space. The problem occurs only when the disk is inserted or left in the computer after a reboot. After I formatted, the disk worked fine. I could do anything I wanted to do, that one can do with such a DVD format. I've looked at Autoplay and selected take no action for each type of file, but that don't help. What can I do to prevent the computer from doing whatever it is doing, or find out why it is damaging the files when I insert -RW dvd disks? Just tested the first disk as I haven't put it back in - It blinked and hasn't stopped yet. I did managed to open a small txt file (just 1 line), only had to wait 2 minutes. Closed it typed this, and it is still blinking away. What the hell is it doing!!
