PATA is the wide ribbon connection that most computers were using a couple of years ago. The newer computers usually have both P-ATA and S-ATA connections with the CD or DVD connected via the wide (40, or 80 strand ) ribbon cables. and the new S-ATA drives connected by the 4? strand cables Note that the power supply connectors for S-ATA and P-ATA are different.
People frequently call the P-ATA drives IDE, which is correct but misleading as S-ATA drives are also IDE. IDE means that the controller is on the disc drive. Only real causes for concern are: Does your system BIOS recognise drives larger than 135/137Gb and is windows set to EnableLargeLBA - (already done in 2K and XP with the current fixes.) And will your system be able to provide sufficient power for the additional drive - about 27 watts. If not, or if you prefer, you can put one of these drives in a USB, or Firewire connected externally powered case I'd advise that when you create the NTFS? Partitions on it (My Computer Manage Storage) you limit the partitions to about 100Gb, (50 is possibly better) as that will allow you to manage the backup/recovery/defrag's in a reasonable amount of time for a single partition. Also - unless you want the system to create and maintain an index of the contents of each file on the disk, turn off NTFS indexing for the partitions JimB Basic ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Dykes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 14, 2006 7:43 PM Subject: Re: Outpost.com | Seagate 3.5 PATA Intern al Hard Drive > When I opened the message, I found that Decker, Michael had written: > > > For anybody who didn't get one of these back in June, the deal is back on. > > 400 GB PATA > > drive for USD 110. > > > > http://www.outpost.com/entry?sku=4596287 > > Thanks, Mike. > > I know nothing about ATA, PATA, etc. Is there anything special about > this drive that it might not work in the average computer....say like an > out of the box eMachine? > > BTW, Outpost.Com is the On-Line store for Fry's Electronics, a family- > owned (or once was if it still isn't) electronic store on the west coast. > Started with one store in San Jose, Ca not many years ago and now they > may have a dozen.
