What function is served by using separate partitions for weddings vs. vacations? What function that cannot be as well served by separate folders within one partition?
K.I.S.S. principle applies. Never use 2 partitions (or 5 or 15 or 30) for a job that's just as well done with one. It's easy to adjust space allocation from one folder to another a single large partition (so easy, you never have to think about it). It's not so easy to reallocate space from one partition to another. Your previous post talked about a separate partition for each year. If you start dividing among years, weddings, vacations, you're at many more than 4 partitions. -----Original Message----- From: Windows Home/SOHO [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jim Dykes Sent: Monday, August 14, 2006 8:19 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Outpost.com | Seagate 3.5 PATA Intern al Hard Dri ve When I opened the message, I found that Carl Houseman had written: > Partitions are for separating operating systems from data, or other major > distinctions pertaining to computer operation. Correct me if I am wrong, I often am, but if one has a 200GB HD partitioned into 4 partitions, called, say F, G, H, I, and it isn't ever planned to be a boot drive, could not one use the "F Drive" for all photos of weddings, "G Drive" for all vacations, etc, etc?? I'd probably just stick it in and have ONE Partition, actually, but for my wife I might just use it as stated above. Or can I "not" do that? If it is just going to be a storage device, the only reason to format it to start with would be for management, no?
