My experience, particularly with XP Home, is this does NOT persist after a reboot, in that case it says your network connection was not connected, sometimes you can click on it and it will ask for you password and then let you in, other times not. Actually, more often not, or it will say something like multiple credentials cannot be used to login to the same server or some such nonsense.

The command line method consistently works, while the gui method does not.

I must be living right cause gui works for me in Pro AND Home, whether I am mapping to a peer resource or a domain resource, without being joined to a domain, or even the same workgroup, and after multiple reboots. I sometimes get the 'not all mapped network drives have reconnected... blah, blah, blah...' but that is usually with a resource that is turned off (duh), or with a slow/busy connection to the resource, which corrects itself without having to do anything.

In short... I have NO problem with that method. All I can say is YMMV and all that... and may I continue to live right. :)

Can't speak to that method working for WME however as we don't use (and don't want to use) that version. We don't want to use Home either, but some folks just can't follow directives or policy. We put up with Home, but WME gets the boot... no ifs, ands, or buts. Note: these are NOT home (as in residence) installations however.
